On My Writer's Tool Box

In my writer's toolbox I keep a motley crew of things. In regards to physically writing words, I like to keep a Thesaurus on hand. In order to convey my thoughts properly I like to find rhetorically appropriate words. For history papers, I want to make certain the words I use are dignified and concise; while for simple compositions, like this blog post, I try to ensure my words "sound like me", rather than a text book. I also use the WordCounter website to check my word count. Not only does it display the word count, it also shows the approximate reading level for my passage. I always want to be at or above post graduate level.
In relation to items that support me in my writing process, music is integral. If I am writing a scholarly piece, I will turn to the works of Erik Satie, or Gabriel Faure. Their melancholy concertos allow me to calm myself and focus. In some cases, the music can even "transport" me to the time period for which I am detailing. If I am translating, I will use music from the target language. Sometimes the music is classical, like a GuQin melody; while some are pop pieces such as a LuHan or a Visual Kei work.
I have always been a simplistic person. All I need is music and a pen to work. I have never been one to write and rewrite. I organize my thoughts soundly in my head, and let them flow to my pen. I look forward to adding to my arsenal, or simply bolstering the tools I have now.
